I finished "Surface Detail" a couple of days ago. It's probably one of my top-3 book in the Culture arc.
I was having some issues to imagine how a Pavulean would look, your creation helps a lot!

Major Kudos for imagining the Pavulean and pulling it off. I was reading the book and was mesmerised by how they would look. Thanks so much for putting the time and effort into it!

I confess I never tried very vard to imaginbe what a Pavulean actually looked like but this recognisably is one, so that clears that up.

You know, this topic of overstrecthed polys has got me thinking.
I skipped any photoshop retouch (bar cropping and resizing) in this pic,so it is what I saw as a render on ZBrush.
It begins to make me wonder how "finished" a model you require depends on the eventual goal.
This was done as fun and learning, nothing more or less..
I mean,I could go back and remesh the model,or I could go back into photoshop and smooth, draw and smudge the problem areas..maybe someday I will, but in the meantime,I've got BIGGER beasts to fry...;)
Thank you ALL for your wonderful insightful comments though!
DAMN! I never even got this level of peer help in Art college.. YAY! DA!!

Damn, fangs maps are stretchy! what a shame! separation between hooves and skin could be better, also. ears seem much more low poly than the rest, nose seem flat...

for the rest: amazing work!

It is impressively detailed. It could probably fit in a documentary.

Nice man, pretty nice model.

Maybe you could reado the uv mapping of the head's tentacles because the texture look stretched. Something seems wrong with the ears geometry too.

You are totally right! Those areas are a bit streched.Just learning the ZBrush ropes so trying to figure things out. UV mapping you say? Whats that?...Duh! :)
